For three years now, Mykolaiv has been living in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. But gradually, restoration projects have begun to be implemented in the hero city. Here facilities are being rebuilt, improvements and landscaping are being carried out, and waste disposal issues are being resolved.

On December 4, the Open Information and Educational Platform “Novyi Mykolaiv” of the Central City Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi invited interested citizens to a fair of environmental public projects and initiatives. Public figures and activists gathered at the fairground to exchange experiences. A meeting on environmental issues within the framework of “Novyi Mykolaiv” took place for the 7th time.

"The main funds that are available today for the development and implementation of projects are funds from international donors. There are a lot of different international programs. Denmark, the UN, the European Union, embassies. The ball on the fiels of public initiatives. And this will most likely happen. As for local authorities, local self-government bodies, I think that this is also realistic. Because I see the steps of the Mykolaiv city mayor, who supports such initiatives. And the fact that we see Ecological Readings and their preview of the project fair is a very powerful signal about the readiness of local self-government to cooperate with the intelligent public today," notes Mykhailo Zolotukhin, director of the NGO "Mykolaiv City Development Fund."

The VII Fair of Environmental Initiatives was held with the support of the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the Mykolaiv City Council within the framework of the XVII Mykolaiv City Ecological Readings “Save for Posterity”. Among the partners were the “Mykolaiv City Development Fund” and the Public Organization “April the Tenth”. Their representatives introduced the attendees to the possibilities of their organizations for supporting eco-initiatives and regranting.

"As a non-ecological organization, we are still always ready to support the initiatives of interested people. These are communities that are created to solve a specific problem. They saw the problem next to them. And they did not pass by. They have a concept and a solution on how to deal with this problem. If a person or a group of people has this vision, has this desire, has this strength, then they will find resources. And from our organization we can support such initiatives," emphasized Hanna Kosiak, representative of the Mykolaiv office of the NGO "April the Tenth".

During several hours of communication, those present had the opportunity to get acquainted, among other things, with ecological youth mini-projects, using the example of the improvement of a square in the Ternivka microdistrict of Mykolaiv.

"The motive was just to live in a beautiful city. And I set myself a challenge, what can I do for this. This is not a new project. This project is not of this year. It is already more than five years old. I and other active residents of the microdistrict make some efforts, participate in projects, attract charitable funds. We plant trees ourselves and take care of them, maintain in good condition those objects that were built earlier than the public budget," shares Olena Malinchyk, a public activist, author of the tutor project for the improvement of the "Rodynnyl" square.

Larisa Leonova, a representative of the public environmental initiative of the same name, shared her own vision of solving environmental problems related to the drainage of the Staryi Vodopoi with the guests of the fair.

"Currently, the public of Mykolaiv has received a very powerful addition. By the way, I am a professional design engineer. Therefore, I know how to do this work. But, excuse me, I am a forced migrant. If I knock on every house and ask if you have a sewer system, you understand that I will not go around the entire microdistrict. The district was ready. That is, if in four hours in the morning and four hours in the evening they collected a hundred signatures under a letter to the mayor about the environmental problems of Staryi Vodopoy, that is already a result. People who have not had a sewer system for seventy years are gradually dying.

"Young people are coming in. The attitude towards life is changing. There should be sewage," emphasized Larysa Leonova.

In today's world, which faces a huge number of environmental challenges, from global warming to environmental pollution, the role of public environmental movements and organizations is becoming increasingly significant. They not only initiate and implement environmental protection projects, but also contribute to raising the level of environmental awareness among the population, which is important for the balanced sustainable development of the country.
